Hello and welcome to the latest edition of TechWatch.

We are excited to have moved TechWatch online to give you greater control of how you interact with our content. As ever, we would welcome your feedback so please let us know if the new format works for you.

Our overall objective for TechWatch is to horizon scan new areas of technology, science and engineering and assessing how new developments can be operationalised to deliver Defence and National Security advantage.

Our deep dive in this edition explores operationalising autonomous systems. This piece delves into how Defence’s use of existing technologies is changing. Recent conflicts have provided a testing ground for next generation technology and have proven the value of uncrewed platforms. Technology is evolving, as is our understanding of how to leverage data and information to provide operational insight enhancing decision making and optimising control systems. We assess the benefits, challenges, and key choices of how autonomous systems are being implemented in Defence.

Following this exploration, we highlight a number of technologies that may change the Defence landscape, from 3D printing for hypersonic platforms to organic solar panels.

Given this is the first of our new online TechWatch Editions we are experimenting with the format. Please let us know what you would like to see and we will do our best to build your ideas into our developing plans.
