Announcements and Updates

Exceptional Range Activity: 30 April or 1 May 2025

On either 30 April or 1 May, noise generated by an activity at MOD Shoeburyness may exceed the usual self-imposed limit of 125 decibels (dB) at monitors.

QinetiQ operates the facility on behalf of the MOD and as part of our daily process to manage explosive activity, we conduct acoustic forecasting, modelling, test shots and monitoring. If it's determined that the upper self-imposed limit of 125dB might be exceeded, the work is postponed until more favourable conditions prevail. However, it's not always possible to delay some work and this particular activity will proceed as long as predictions do not indicate that 135dB will be exceeded.

This exception to the application of the usual upper limit will only apply to a single event conducted on one of the days listed. All other work conducted on these days will be subject to the usual upper limit. The activity is subject to changes to the schedule.

Old Ranges Patrols

Public use of the MOD foreshore between Shoebury Common and East Beach is prohibited. This means that no access is permitted for any purpose or reason, at any time. This is due to the historic use of the area involving explosive ordnance and the inherent risk of unexploded objects. The foreshore is also regulated by the MOD byelaws in order to preserve public safety. Fines and other penalties are applicable for acts in contravention of the byelaws, including trespass on these prohibited areas.

QinetiQ conducts foreshore patrols using its amphibious vehicles during the peak summer months when there is an increase in the volume of trespass. Anyone encountered by our patrols will be asked to leave the area. Please co-operate for your safety and for that of your family. More information about MOD prohibited beaches can be found here.

The yellow diamond located at Rampart Street that indicates the 'open to the public' status of Shoeburyness East Beach is currently non-operational. The beach and foreshore remain open to the public as far as the yellow buoy line which demarcates the boundary of the area licensed for public use.

Personal Water Craft: Public Spaces Protection Order (PWC PSPO)

In addition to the restrictions and prohibitions imposed by the MOD byelaws, the MOD foreshore is included in the new 'Restricted Area' of a PSPO introduced by Southend City Council in November 2022. Fixed penalties will be issued to anyone found to be in breach of the Order. Full information can be found here.
