Electronic Warfare Hackathon

05/03/2025

The Air Mission Led Innovation (MLI) team at MOD Boscombe Down successfully delivered a novel activity for Army Futures in the ‘Drone Effectiveness Workshop’, known as the EW Hackathon (Electronic Warfare).

Army Futures worked with QinetiQ to define a baseline EW testing scenario for five industry suppliers to experience, learn and get feedback on their systems for future development with the aim of upskilling UK Industry.

The activity was conducted in a temporary anechoic environment, supported by the staff and using the equipment of the REG (Radio Frequency Environment Generator) team. Suppliers brought a varied range of UAS models and equipment - from systems that are currently deployed in theatre - to systems under development. The activity was a huge success. Critically it proved hugely valuable for the suppliers in understanding how to make their systems more resilient.

One of the suppliers provided a valuable summary of the day:

“The content was excellent, particularly as the industry typically lacks access to these testing capabilities and the diverse range of electronic warfare (EW) threats encountered in different scenarios. This opportunity allowed us to conduct testing in a controlled lab environment, providing valuable data to enhance our systems and those of our suppliers/partners. Additionally, the insights gained will contribute to the broader RPAS/UAS and C-UAS communities.”

It was a busy week for the team who did a fantastic job engaging with stakeholders and delivering a novel and innovative activity, demonstrating the value of Test & Evaluation and the capability of the LTPA.
